Labor Day 2018: Will Rogers State Beach Trash Report

On Labor Day this year, I decided to take a swim in the ocean. As a member of the general public and private citizen, I did not anticipate having to avoid a debris field full of beach trash carelessly left behind by the Los Angeles County Dept. of Beaches & Harbors (LACDBH)... but that is what happened.....

Dateline: Monday, Sept. 3, 2018 (aka, LABOR DAY) right smack dab in front of Will Rogers Lifeguard Headquarters (WRHQ) and Tower #14, a huge debris field of released beach trash was again present. LACDBH continues to rake the beach with its tractors and deposits, releases and leaves behind the beach trash that it collects right in front of WRHQ and Tower #14, which continues to represent a threat to public health and safety, not to mention our Ocean Lifeguards who must respond across this beach to protect the public.  In spite of the fact that LACDBH has been notified several times not to deposit and release and leave behind trash on the beach, they continue to do so.  Either they do not care or this is intentional.  All summer long this has been going on according to one veteran Ocean Lifeguard who works this area regularly.

The time has come for LACDBH to be held accountable for this ongoing threat to public health and safety presented by this hazard.

Here are the photos I took at approximately 10:20 a.m., along with a video.  Who knows what is entangled and buried in this huge debris field of trash, e.g., broken glass, broken sharp pieces of plastic, hypodermic needles, etc.

What should be done is that LACDBH should promptly send a crew to hand pick up this trash so that it does not pose a threat to public health and safety. But they do not even do that on a regular basis followed their negligent practice of leaving all this trash behind.

Perhaps the Board of Supervisors can effect the change that is necessary to correct this ongoing public health and safety threat.
