August 21, 2018: Will Rogers State Beach Trash Report

Dateline: Tuesday morning, August 21, 2018 in front of Will Rogers Lifeguard Headquarters (WRHQ).  Here are the photos I took of the beach trash left behind by L.A. County Dept. of Beaches & Harbors (LACDBH) right in front of WRHQ and lifeguard tower #14, which continues to represent a public health and safety risk to both the general public and ocean lifeguards.

Below, is a sampling of the beach trash left behind by LACDBH which I picked up by hand and later disposed of properly in a nearby trash can.

Below, three photos of additional beach trash (and kelp) raked up by LACDBH and released and left behind beside WRHQ...

LACDBH should promptly send a crew to hand pick up this beach trash after it leaves it behind but LACDBH continues NOT to do so. Instead it simply releases and leaves all of this raked up beach trash behind.  Continuing to do so is at best careless and at worst is gross negligence.

The Board of Supervisors should audit this practice and demand changes so that the general public and ocean lifeguards are not placed at higher risk of injury due to this irresponsible and repeated action by LACDBH.

Respectfully submitted,

Will Maguire, Esq.

August 27, 2018: Will Rogers State Beach Trash Report

Monday morning, August 27, 2018... here are several photos of the beach trash left carelessly behind by the L.A. County Dept. of Beaches & Harbors (LACDBH) this morning as is their practice despite being asked several times to pick this trash up instead of leaving it behind where it poses a public health and safety hazard for both the general public and ocean lifeguards.

This is right in front of Will Rogers Lifeguard Headquarters and lifeguard tower #14.

Since LACDBH knows that it leaves this beach trash behind after collecting it with their tractors and rakes, you have to wonder why they would continue to do so after being asked several times by the lifeguards to not do so and to pick it up.  Negligence?  Carelessness?  The fact that it continues to occur suggests that this is done intentionally with reckless disregard for the health and safety of the general public and ocean lifeguards.

Respectfully submitted,

Will Maguire, Esq.

Labor Day 2018: Will Rogers State Beach Trash Report

On Labor Day this year, I decided to take a swim in the ocean. As a member of the general public and private citizen, I did not anticipate having to avoid a debris field full of beach trash carelessly left behind by the Los Angeles County Dept. of Beaches & Harbors (LACDBH)... but that is what happened.....

Dateline: Monday, Sept. 3, 2018 (aka, LABOR DAY) right smack dab in front of Will Rogers Lifeguard Headquarters (WRHQ) and Tower #14, a huge debris field of released beach trash was again present. LACDBH continues to rake the beach with its tractors and deposits, releases and leaves behind the beach trash that it collects right in front of WRHQ and Tower #14, which continues to represent a threat to public health and safety, not to mention our Ocean Lifeguards who must respond across this beach to protect the public.  In spite of the fact that LACDBH has been notified several times not to deposit and release and leave behind trash on the beach, they continue to do so.  Either they do not care or this is intentional.  All summer long this has been going on according to one veteran Ocean Lifeguard who works this area regularly.

The time has come for LACDBH to be held accountable for this ongoing threat to public health and safety presented by this hazard.

Here are the photos I took at approximately 10:20 a.m., along with a video.  Who knows what is entangled and buried in this huge debris field of trash, e.g., broken glass, broken sharp pieces of plastic, hypodermic needles, etc.

What should be done is that LACDBH should promptly send a crew to hand pick up this trash so that it does not pose a threat to public health and safety. But they do not even do that on a regular basis followed their negligent practice of leaving all this trash behind.

Perhaps the Board of Supervisors can effect the change that is necessary to correct this ongoing public health and safety threat.
